A Shopaholic Using My Bad Habit for the Greater Good

Back to School Shopping

It’s that time again – summer is coming to an end and school is right around the corner. For us, moms, we are probably ecstatic and thankful…for the kids, not so much! Although, I have to admit, I remember thoroughly enjoying the back-to-school shopping trips to prepare for school – new school clothes, school supplies, etc. It was the actual going BACK to school that was not so fun!

As we prepare for our back to school shopping, remember these few things:

1. Make a list. Don’t get carried away with all of the “cute stuff” (believe me, it’s easy to do), be realistic on what you are looking for, needing, etc.

2. Set a budget. The economy is turning around, but, it’s been a tough time for all of us. Make sure you are spending what you CAN and NOT what you CAN’T!

3. Go Consignment. Kids grow so fast. It’s rare that they actually “wear something out”. Check out consigment stores or a local favorite, here, Just Between Friends. Get your friends together and do your own consignment swap shopping night. Otherwise, the good ol’ tried and true, garage sale, is another place to find some great deals!

4. Shop Sales. Money saving queen is an awesome resource, as well as perusing the Sunday advertisements on your own. Lots of retailers are creating their own lists to send coupons, special savings, etc, right to your email inbox. My goal is to have a section of Stylish Stepmom keeping you up-to-date on all of the “stylish savings” going on in your area.

5. Plan Ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute when you are battling the aisles with everyone else that waited until the last minute. Do your shopping now. Maybe, it’s better for you to stretch out your budget and do a little bit at a time. Plan it out by week of what you are going to buy and how much you are going to buy.

6. Have Fun. It’s your kids and you love them! It’s an exciting time for them. Let them make their own choices (within reason, of course). It’s amazing the cooperation you may get and how smooth the process may be, if you give them the “illusion” that they are in charge and picking out their own items.

So, before you cram in all of your last minute summer activities, take a minute to think about your back-to-school shopping. We know the kids aren’t ready, but, are you?!?

Don’t delay…go back-to-school shopping today!
