From the Kids…From the Heart!

Valentine’s Day is, again, upon us! And, people are running around, frantically, calling florist, candy, and jewelry stores to find the perfect Valentine for their sweetie.

But, what about the kids? Kids love to give gifts. They are always so proud to see the surprise on the recipients face. But, what can they do that is within their skill level and financial budget? Hmm…crafts! Valentine crafts!

So, I recruited my stepson and husband (to his dismay) and we headed out to get a few supplies. Majority of the craft supplies, we had at home. We just needed some ‘filler’ for the ‘gift’ part of our project.

My stepson couldn’t wait to get started on the crafts. However, we, quickly, learned that he was more excited, when the craft took less than 5 minutes. It turned out to be a fun Saturday evening, which, also, turned into a Sunday afternoon too. I,definitely, need to get better at calculating the time it takes to DO the projects. Wait, I should clarify, by saying, how long it takes ME to complete all of the crafts. Pinterest is full, I mean, full, of ideas. But, it doesn’t tell you that if you plan on doing 5+ projects it is going to take you quite a bit of time. I digress….

We had FUN!!

And the final results:

Our Gifts

Here is what we have for our gifts:

“We are ‘mint’ to be” – a jar filled with mints

“You’ve got the ‘write’ stuff” – pens and pencils wrapped in Valentine’s ribbon

“Coffee and Cream. You make my heart beam.” – White coffee cup with handwritten notes on it (via sharpie marker) filled with a small package of coffee, candy, and hand cream.

“I am ‘nuts’ about you.” – a jar of almonds with Valentine’s decorations.

“You are one in a million” – a chocolate bar in a ‘one million’ dollar wrapping

“My Pop Rocks” – a bucket filled with tootsie pops and pop rocks

“You are sweet” – a bucket filled with miniature candy bars on sticks

Homemade Art

And, nothing beats original art work by your child/children. It’s a keepsake that will last forever, as well as a perfect holiday decoration too! I LOVE the ‘Super Dad’ heart drawing (on the other side is a picture of a heart with a neck tie – that is “Work Dad”)! It has to be one of my favorites! The other heart was made by ‘finger tip painting’. And, the little frame is decorated with leftover puzzle pieces and it says, “love you to pieces”. Ok, that is one of my favorites too!

And, I think the ‘Valentine bug’ and the ‘craft bug’ rubbed off on my stepson and husband, because look at what I was surprised with during our Valentine craft weekend…..

My own homemade Valentine gift! I LOVE IT and to be cherished always!!  (Sorry – photo is a little dark- it’s a white tee with a hand written Valentine)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

National Wear Red Day – Friday, February 1, 2013

10 Year Anniversary Pin - Go Red for Women

National Wear Red Day is Friday, February 1, 2013!

It is the 10th Anniversary of the ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign!

The American Heart Association is challenging America to “Go Red” for National Wear Red Day, February – heart awareness month, as well as ALL YEAR LONG!

Did you know that 1 in 3 women will die of heart disease. AND, it’s the #1 killer of women above all cancers combined. All cancers combined? Wow! Think about it, think about 3 important women in your life. It’s pretty easy to come up with 3 women, right? Now imagine life without one of them. Scary, huh? It could happen. It’s the reality of the statistics, for now.  But, the American Heart Association is continuing to create awareness, educate, and raise funds for research to fight the battle against heart disease. And, they need your help to do that!

Here are just a few things you can do:

*Wear RED on National Wear Red Day – Friday, Febuary 1, 2013.

* Encourage others to wear red on National Wear Red Day – associations, churches, co-workers, etc.

*Decorate your business in red – store fronts, lobby areas, etc.

*Host a healthy lunch at work or dinner with friends.

*Educate others to live heart healthy lifestyles.

Please remember, the ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign does focus on women and their fight against heart disease. But, heart disease affects men too. So, make sure they know to live a heart healthy lifestyle too!

RED at Donna's Fashions

Looking for something RED to wear on National Wear Red Day? You can head to Donna’s Fashions (Tulsa). These are just a few ‘fun finds’ that you can get there – for women and men. Yes, men should be wearing red on National Wear Red Day too! Uh, I think my name needs to be on the RED cowboy boots that have tan HEARTS embroidered on them. Can you say, perfect?!?

Exclusive Rustic Cuff at Donna's Fashions

And, most definitely, my name needs to be on this cuff. It’s an exclusive cuff being sold at Donna’s Fashions (by Rustic Cuff) in support of the Go Red for Women campaign. A percentage of sales, of this particular cuff, will be donated to the local (Tulsa) chapter of the  American Heart Association. Promo running through the month of February. Strictly, my opinion, but, this quote is perfect for women and their fight against heart disease:

“Strong Women. May we know them. May we raise them. May we be them.”

There are a variety of businesses, in Tulsa, as well as across the nation that are “Going Red” in their own way. Make sure to contact them, check their social media pages, and show your support when and where you can.

So, mark your calendars for Friday, February 1, 2013 and WEAR RED!!

Surviving the Biggest Shopping Weekend of the Year….

The holidays are upon us! Thanksgiving is THIS WEEK! Where does the time go?

Ok, I’m the first one to tell you that I LOVE turkey day. And, I am thankful for so much. But, I’m not going to lie, Thanksgiving weekend is also about SHOPPING for me. Black Friday! Small Business Saturday! Cyber Monday! I mean, come on, if you can’t find a deal over the weekend, I don’t know WHAT to tell you!

Black Friday can be chaotic and crazy! Small Business Saturday is a great way to show support for local business. And, Cyber Monday is a perfect option to shop from the comfort of your own home.

But, remember a few things before you grab your wallet this weekend:

1. Make a List – Who are you buying for and what are you buying.

2. Stick to your Budget – Decide what you can spend per item.

3. Research – There are a ton of websites available to help you search out Black Friday/Cyber Monday steals and deals in addition to the specific store websites. Do your homework ahead of time to insure a great deal! As well as, there are smartphone/computer apps too!

Phone/Computer Apps: TGIBlackFriday/TGICyberMonday,, Friday Deal Finders

4. Beware of ‘Bundles’ – Some stores will ‘bundle’ items together as a way to show savings. Check the price of each item, individually, to insure savings.

5. Beware of ‘Bait and Switch’ – Some stores will use the ‘doorbuster deals’ to get you in the door and then up sell you on a more expensive item.

6. Buy the Item you Want/Need – Just because it’s a ‘steal’ in savings doesn’t mean it’s the right item for you. For example, if you are shopping for a TV, most of your ‘doorbuster deals’ are not going to have all the ‘bells and whistles’ that everyone is looking for as their main TV, but, might be good as a secondary TV. It’s a good deal, but, not good for the long term goal.

7. Refund/Warranty Policies – Be aware of policies that might change due to specific Black Friday/Cyber Monday specials.

8. Additional Shopping – Just because you saved money on one item doesn’t mean you should ‘over shop’ on unnecessary items.

9. Be Kind – It is so important to be kind to others on days like this and every day. It can get crazy, but, remember the ‘true reason for the season’.

Let the turkey be served and the shopping chaos and craziness begin….Happy shopping, everyone!
