Kid-Friendly Halloween! (Product List – GDGC)

Ghosts, Goblins, and Witches…Oh My! It’s that time of year, again…..Halloween!

Where kids get dressed up, the house gets ‘creeped out’ and, it seems, the scarier the better!

Halloween seems to truly be a kid’s holiday – so, make sure to include them in the festivities!

Alternatives to Pumpkin Carving

If you are like me, I cannot stand pumpkin carving. I have no desire to scoop ‘the guts’ out of a pumpkin and attempt to make some sort of recognizable design with a ‘pumpkin carving kit’, that never seems to carve correctly, without cramping your fingers and leaving you with some blisters. SO, why not come up with some alternative options? I’m in!

We have an 8YO boy who is all about super heroes these days. He received the Captain America Pumpkin “Push Ins” for a birthday gift. Done! It’s adorable! And, why not let your kids be creative by painting a pumpkin or, the newest trend, ‘junkins’, which is where you decorate your pumpkin with things you find around the house. Brilliant! No cost – other than the pumpkin (unless you have your own garden).

Fabric Pumpkins

Maybe, you don’t want to deal with the ‘real’ pumpkins at all. I can relate to that too. So, why not make fabric pumpkins? Find some  fabric, take a roll of toilet paper (yes, a roll of toilet paper), and wrap the fabric around the toilet paper. Use brown paper for the stem and green felt/pipe cleaners for the leaves. It’s super easy and really cute! And, no one has to know you used toilet paper!

Food Fun!

This is where I excel when it comes to the holidays – FOOD! Ok, not necessarily MAKING food. But, DEFINITELY eating food! Once again, I turned to my dear friend, Pinterest, for some Halloween food fun! The ideas were endless. But, these were a few that ‘jumped out at us’.

Mini Marshmallow Ghosts:  Fill skinny plastic pretzel bags (you can find in candy making section of Michael’s, etc) with mini marshmallows. Tie with black ribbon and two eyes and a mouth for a face. Can use black marker, construction paper, or felt.

Ghost Suckers:  Take your favorite suckers and cover with white fabric. Tie with ribbon and add a face with black marker.

Bloody Band-Aids: Graham cracker. Place white frosting square in middle of graham cracker. Add red frosting (I used a red frosting writer) to the white square.

Creepy Q-Tips: Place mini-marshmallow on either end of toothpick. Melt butterscotch chips. Pick one end of toothpicks with marshmallow and dip into melted mixture. Let dry. Will look like Q-tip with ear wax.

Witch Hats: Fudge stripe cookie placed face down. Place orange frosting in middle of cookie and put a hershey kiss on top of frosting. Press slightly for some frosting to ‘ooze’ around hershey kiss (creating a colored band on the hat).

And, for a little more decorative flair, serve your goodies in clear bowls/vases and make faces on them too – to create a ghost (when serving ‘white’ food) and a pumpkin (when serving ‘orange’ food).  Make faces from construction paper and/or felt.

Whatever you do, involve the kids (and grandparents too) and have fun! It’s a great way to spend some time together, have a few laughs, and get those ‘creative juices’ flowing!

We had a blast working on all of our projects – and certainly had some laughs!

Thank you to my awesome helpers too – our 8 year old, Nicholas, and Grandma Nancy. It was fun to work on all of these with you!

Happy Halloween!

Gift Baskets – On The Corner

I stole one of these gift ‘basket’ ideas from my Mom. She is a teacher and would always put together a ‘school supply’ storage box for her graduating students. It was always filled FULL with all kinds of school supply ‘randomness’ that you may not think you need…until…you need it!

But, I’m a big fan of gift baskets in general! Who doesn’t love a gift with lots of little gifts inside. And, you can customize them by a theme and/or favorite college, as I did with these. The OSU gift basket was catered more towards a girl with OSU sunglasses, earrings, notepad, watch and more. While, the OU gift basket was catered more towards the guy as I used a microwave popcorn tub for the basket and filled it with OU plastic cups, playing cards, and coasters. Customize it to fit graduate receiving the gift basket!

School Bags - On The Corner

(My apologies – no idea why this picture turned out cloudy!)

What new graduate doesn’t need a new school bag? LOTS of books! Heavy books…all around campus! Enough said! Customize it to the school of their choice.

‘Roommate Refreshers’ – On The Corner

And, last but not least, ‘roommate refreshers’. I couldn’t resist these as your ‘graduate gag gift’. Let’s have some fun with the reality that they will have to share their dorm with a roommate. And, a dorm room doesn’t always smell ‘fresh’…if you know what I mean. So, why not give them poo-pourri or trap-a-crap bathroom air freshener. I had to show these on the segment – they just cracked me up! And, for a more ‘serious’, ‘less humorous’ approach to refreshing a room, why not use the candle warmer lamp. It’s perfect for avoiding the ‘open flame’ restrictions.

Congratulations to ALL the new graduates! The best is yet to come…..

Another Designer Goes Target…

Another designer goes Target…I’m beginning to think that will be the new “slang phrase” in the fashion world…”Going Target”! I mean, wow, more and more big name designers are hitting the mass merchants.

Zac Posen is not the first one to do this. There have been many designers that have gone this route following in the foosteps of the pioneer, Isaac Mizrahi.

This particular line by Zac Posen is extremely trendy and very fun! The dress in the pic, for example, is two dresses in one. The ruffled skirt can come off of the dress and then it becomes more of a straight skirt option. How great is that! Designer fashion at affordable prices with an added bonus! Two dresses in one!

What does the world say? Or, better yet, what do, you, fashionistas have to say to the big name designers hitting the mass merchants? My guess is the answer will come out split. I’m actually split on this particular subject.

The majority of me LOVES the fact that big name designers are bringing their fashions to a more practical level. Why not let the masses of the world have access to the same designer fashions as the societal elite? As well as, who wouldn’t love that option with the economy these days. But, the other part of me, the smaller porton, feels like it’s taking away the mystique and mystery of a big name designer label. It takes away from the underlying mystery of WHY so many people covet various designers and how they set goals and dreams for owning certainly pieces of their favorite designer. They have to work for it, because of the high end price tag with the big name designers, the true fashionistas will do what it takes to get their hands on those coveted pieces. Now, by being in the mass markets, are you taking some of that away?

I really do love that more designers are offering high fashion items at more affordable prices. It’s a fun way to follow the trends without emptying your pocketbook.

What do you think? Are you “for” or “against” big name designers hitting the mass merchant stream?
